Winter swimming was one of my important goals in 2019. I started preparing for it in May 2018.
I took a cold shower every morning during the last months. I felt amazingly good! In combination with meditation, it was a great start of the day. The Iceman Wim Hof inspired me to explore more about winter swimming and I decided to try that in January 2019.
Winter swimming requires not only body preparation, but it is a mental game also. The mental side is even more important! Here we also talk about the power of will and the ability to focus. I think this is the main reason why so many cannot get into the ice cold water. We can compare it with skydiving, where it's so scary to jump out of the plane. There is also the fear of ice cold water. Fear of the unknown, fear of suffering.
So, one of the most important things is finding a suitable place for a winter bath. The site must be safe and easily accessible. After Christmas I read an article in a local newspaper that Lillehammer Yoga Club uses a local water channel for swimming in winter. This water channel does not freeze in winter. This is a perfect place for winter swimming. So, I was ready!
Was it hard? How was it? These are the most popular questions I had to answer to people. No, it wasn't hard. All the previous days I tried to visualize and focus for this day. I was ready - physically and mentally! Me and my wife started the day with a cross-country ski tour in Lillehammer area. So, I was well warmed up. I had prepared everything for a winter bath - warm clothes, towels and hot tea. To make you feel pleasant after swimming, the preparation process is very important. You need warm clothes and a hot drink. Get ready properly!
The winter swimming area in Lillehammer is close to Olympic Park and is easily accessible. Parking is just 20 meters from the swimming platform. I was very glad that there was no need to find a hard-to-reach place.
I was very focused, so I didn't think much. Took off clothes and went into the water. It was amazingly easy. I tried to be calm, relaxed. It was so nice! I spent about 30 seconds in the water. The feeling was fantastic! Then I quickly dressed up and went to my car to drink warm tea. I was happy about this achievement! A really great feeling comes only later, when the blood begins to circulate in the body. It is a really great feeling. The feeling that you are alive, you live! Great energy!
Now I'm ready for the next challenges!
There is just one life for each of us: our own.
